Tasmanian Model Solar Car Challenge 2003 As
part of National Youth Week 2003 the Tasmanian Division of the Australian
International Model Solar Vehicle Challenge was held at Woodbridge
District High School on Saturday. In
overcast conditions all the teams entered competed well. Teams came from as far a field as Devonport.
Last years
winning school in the Model Solar Car Challenge, Clarence High represented
by Ewen Jeffery, was pipped by his brother Kent Jeffery from Rosny
College, for the state Model Solar Car Title.
Third and fourth were teams from the host Woodbridge District High
and fifth was a team from Queechy High in Launceston who were unbeaten
until the finals. These five
teams with their cars were selected to represent Tasmania at the National
Finals in Adelaide in November and receive prize money to help with the
trip from our sponsors. Fastest
time for the day went to another Queechy team who did not make the finals! In
conjunction with the Solar Car race was the Secondary Solar Boat Race,
which was won by the reigning state champion Theo Wadsley for the third
year. The Distance Education
student was closely pushed by two teams from Rosny College. New this year
was the Primary Solar Boat race that attracted a huge field and was won by
a team of female students from Woodbridge District High: Honni Mooy-Cox,
Jane Haley, Jessica Groombridge and Kimberly Welling.
This boat on the day was faster than the secondary boat.
Large teams represented Snug Primary (Maureen Headlam), Lindisfarne
Primary (Kerry Aspinall) and Woodbridge District High (Graham Armstrong).
Well Done to these school s and teachers on this great effort! All 100
competitors received participation certificates and winners received
T-shirts and trophies from the sponsors Hydro Tasmania and The Institution
of Engineers for supplying money for airfares to the finals, Pure Foods
for the competition T-shirts and fine trophies and Sunsmart for providing
a nice non-rainy but cloudy day. Hoping for a bigger and
sunnier event next year. Thanks
