Tasmanian Model Solar Car Challenge 2005

The Tasmanian championships of the Australian International Model Solar Vehicle Challenge 2005 were held at Newtown High School on Saturday October 15, 2005.  In fine conditions all 17 car teams and 15 boat teams competed well in their round robin elimination rounds.  Teams came from as far a field as Launceston.

In conjunction with the Solar Car Race was the Solar Boat Race, which was won by a Chris Iseli of Taroona High.  The Primary division was won again by Jamie and Freya Cox of Mt Nelson Primary.

Last years winning car team, Queechy High were challenged and beaten by the two Hobart College teams ably lead by the seasoned campaigner Mark Iseli.  Four teams with their cars were selected to represent Tasmania at the National Finals in Melbourne in November as well as for the first time a Secondary Boat raced by Chris Iseli.

The car finals were abandoned after a couple of run offs due to rain.  The results were based on the round robin results.  First and second were the Hobart College teams of The Brainless Beast and Schnell followed by Queechy team of Solar Eagle in third.  The Mouse from Rose Bay was fourth followed by Peanut from Newtown High, however Rose Bay were ineligible for a trophy as their can was deemed too wide, they received a trophy for Best Effort on the Day, accordingly Newtown gained fourth place.

Thanks to the sponsors Hydro Hand On Energy Centre and Engineers Australia for supplying funding for airfares for teams to the finals.

John Jeffery will manage the Tasmanian team at the National Finals at Scienceworks in Melbourne in November. We look forward to working work our National Sponsor Jaycar.
